v8.0.0 – codename: “best of both worlds” NOW LIVE!

So, I know what you’re probably thinking…

The lateralization of function (right-brain/left-brain) isn’t the most exact model for how our brains/minds work.
And I know this… it’s nice to think that we can be predominantly creative or logical and attribute those things to activity of certain parts of our brains.   Research tells us that it’s not that localized… and even if they were, things are never as clear cut as that, and almost everything that we put our minds to are a combination of our aesthetic skills and our organizational skills.
So yeah…
the motif using the lateralization of function is to demonstrate exactly this… the cycle of influence in our work stems from our ability to balance and judge rationally… but to project our emotional and creative quality.  *Whether that’s left-brain vs. right-brain or not, I choose this as the visual representation.

FURTHER, I realize that I associate the left-brain (logic) with my professional work…. and the right-brain (emotion) with my personal life…. this too is not as clear-cut.  My work and my life are both intertwined and are a direct influence of all parts of my mind and personality.  So there.

Now, along with the splash page, I decided to further separate my personal website from my professional work by creating domains that represented each.

The reason for this is multifaceted.

  • I have been growing more tired of ipage web-hosting for my sandbox.  Its service has been consistent, but there are many features that I desire that I do not have. … namely WebDAV, remote MySQL, cPanel, etc.  I enjoy iPage’s inexpensive domain registration and SimpleScripts installer, which I will most likely continue using for Client Websites.
  • I am now using Host Gator for richardphung.com…. as a result, I created richardphung.net that I would use as a business front for clients.  Other reasons for this include tax-write-offs for hosting costs, etc.

The migration process was actually pretty simple:

  • Back-up data from OLD richardphung.com & subdomains (info., projects., sandbox., sites)
  • Upload data to NEW host (via IP)
  • Recreate subdomains via cPanel (NEW HOST)
  • Back-up MySQL databases from OLD HOST
  • Create MySQL databases on NEW HOST
  • Run SQL queries to populate NEW DBs
  • Disable old MySQL DBs
  • Disable old subdomain pointers
  • Recreate MX entries
  • Recreate CNAME Aliases
  • Register richardphung.net
  • Assign root domain
  • Update config.php on WordPress & Joomla Installations
  • Update relative links
  • Design Splash screen.
  • Clean & back-up OLD site
  • Clean & back-up NEW site
  • Update WordPress

Altogether, it took about a day’s worth of navigating.

Hope you like it!
